The Internet has exploded with all kinds of reviews for all kinds of products. This is no different with backup software. Unfortunately, not all these reviews are good ones or legitimate. However, there are things you can do when looking at a backup software review to properly grade it so you can know how much stock to put into it.

1. Check the date first.
The first thing you should do is check the date of the review. Anything more than a year old should be viewed very skeptically. The reason is that software changes rapidly and what was the case then may no longer be the case now regarding features and performance. For this reason, you should give older reviews less weight and use them more as a guide. However, if you see a trend with newer reviews, this is worth noting.

2. Determine if the author has an agenda.
Many people are still unaware of this but many reviews are actually subtle sales pitches where they are promoting a certain product either by directly having links to it or by knocking a competitor’s product. If you can find links to another site that are anything but the direct web address for the company, there is a good sign that the link is an affiliate link. Now, if the author is open about getting paid for sales through the links, you can cut them some more slack as it is not uncommon for some people to do legitimate reviews for the best products. Naturally, some of those would get solid reviews and it does not mean that their reviews are not credible.

3. Does the article point out pros and cons?
Another thing customers should be looking at is whether the review is a thorough review. Does it point out the pros and cons or is it just blindly glowing or negative. What you want to find is details and specifics and not just opinion. You want to know why they formed the opinion. If they do not give much in details, there is no way to gauge their opinion. Therefore, it is of little value to you.

4. How are they using the software?
You also want to make a note of how they are using the software and how it will compare to how you would use it. This can give you a good idea of how significant their review will be in terms of your needs. If their usage is much different than how you would use the software, their review may be of little value to you.

By keeping all these things in mind, you should have a better understanding of how to properly read a backup software review.
